Dutch singer Kovacs, whose album Child of Sin (2023) featured a duet with Till Lindemann of Rammstein, releases “Leave the Sun Behind” on August 28. The track is the second single from a new chapter in her artistic journey, which began earlier this year with “A Perfect Crime”.
Kovacs says: “While the previous single explored the blurred space between memory and imagination, ‘Leave the Sun Behind’ turns to a different kind of memory: a nostalgic farewell to carefree summers and the innocence of youth. It is a song about growing up without ever fully letting go of who you once were. It captures the strange beauty of looking back at a world you remember vividly, but can never return to.”
Musically, “Leave the Sun Behind” continues Kovacs’ exploration of electronic music while retaining the dark atmosphere and distinctive intensity that have always defined her work. Drawing energy from the raw power of Berlin’s club scene, she has carefully explored how to combine it with her unmistakable soul voice. This journey has led her back to the roots of early electronic music: old-school electro and futuristic sounds inspired by the 1970s, with clear references to pioneers of the genre such as Kraftwerk.
The music video for “Leave the Sun Behind” expands the visual world introduced with “A Perfect Crime”. Once again shot by renowned cinematographer Martijn Brukhuisen, a longtime collaborator of Anton Corbijn, and directed by Jiske Reykels, the film develops the raw, cinematic visual language of its predecessor.
Who Is Kovacs?
Kovacs rose to prominence in 2015 with her debut album Shades of Black, partially recorded in Cuba. The album charted in 36 countries and produced the European hit “My Love”, a Bond-inspired, noir tango that reached No. 1 in Greece and the Netherlands. That same year, she won the Edison Pop Award and performed at major festivals including North Sea Jazz, Glastonbury, Sziget, Rock am Ring and Pinkpop.
Her second album, Cheap Smell (2018), delved even deeper into raw, personal songwriting. Her third album, Child of Sin (2023), released on her own label, Wolf Recordings, featured a duet with Till Lindemann of Rammstein and incorporated the sounds of a Turkish Romani ensemble. It achieved the highest new entry on the Dutch Album Top 100.
Since then, Kovacs has performed sold-out shows across Europe and Asia and continues to bring her music to less expected corners of the world. Upcoming destinations include Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Romania and Turkey.
With “Leave the Sun Behind”, Kovacs opens a new chapter: the same voice, a new sound.
